With its rich culture, beautiful landscapes, and engaging attractions, Charleston is the perfect destination for families looking to explore and create lasting memories together. Here’s why we love Charleston and what families can do while visiting this beautiful city:
1. Explore Historic Downtown
Stroll through Charleston’s historic downtown, where families can admire the stunning architecture, cobblestone streets, and vibrant gardens. We love visiting notable landmarks like the Battery and Waterfront Park, where the kids can run and play while enjoying beautiful views of the harbor.
2. Visit Fort Sumter National Monument
Take a ferry ride to Fort Sumter, the site of the first shots fired in the Civil War. The short boat ride is exciting for kids, and once there, families can explore the fort, learn about its history, and enjoy stunning views of Charleston from the water. Remember in the summer, it will be hot!
3. Discover the South Carolina Aquarium
The South Carolina Aquarium is a fantastic place for families to learn about local wildlife and marine life. We enjoy the various interactive exhibits and the opportunity to see sea turtles, alligators, and other fascinating animals up close. This is one of our favorite activities!
4. Enjoy a Plantation Tour
Charleston is home to several historic plantations, such as Magnolia Plantation and Gardens or Boone Hall Plantation. These sites often offer family-friendly tours, beautiful gardens, and opportunities to learn about the region's history and culture.
5. Go to the Beach at IOP
Isle of Palms can be crowded, so make sure to get a spot on the beach early! There are lots of local restaurants to choose from and it’s a wonderful way to spend the day with the whole family! We tend to eat at Toast All Day in Mount Pleasant on the way, then Acme for lunch or dinner.
6. Visit the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry
This hands-on museum is designed for kids and features interactive exhibits that encourage creativity and exploration. From art activities to pretend play, there’s plenty to keep children entertained while learning at the same time.
7. Go on a Ghost Tour
For families with older kids, consider taking a family-friendly ghost tour. These tours share Charleston’s rich history through spooky stories and legends, making for an entertaining and educational evening adventure.
8. Enjoy Charles Towne Landing
Step aboard the Adventure, Charleston's only 17th-century replica sailing ship, see cannons fired, or take a peek at otters, bears, bison, and more at the Animal Forest natural habitat zoo. The grounds also include 80 acres of gardens, with an elegant live oak alley and the Legare Waring House.
