A family day in Beech Mountain, North Carolina, offers a high-elevation escape with temperatures rarely topping 75°F in summer and a snowy wonderland in winter . Situated at 5,506 feet, it is the highest town in Eastern America, providing a mix of outdoor adventure and cozy relaxation for families.  Here is a curated itinerary for a family day in Beech Mountain, adaptable for different seasons. 

Morning: Mountains & Mining

  • Breakfast at Fred’s General Mercantile: Start the day at this iconic local spot known for its rustic charm, breakfast sandwiches, and coffee.

  • Explore the Emerald Outback Trails: Head to these 7+ miles of hiking trails. They offer moderate, scenic routes suitable for families, with beautiful forest views.

  • Gem Mining at White Wolf Lodge: Keep the kids entertained with a visit to the gem mine to find local treasures. 

Lunch: Pizza and Play

  • Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria: A staple for families on the mountain. It features a kid-friendly atmosphere with a specialized menu.

  • Mountaineer Adventure Tower: Located right next to the Pizzeria, this is the highest self-guided adventure tower in the Southeast. It features 3 levels of climbing, a 25-foot slide, and, if visiting in the winter, it is adjacent to the free sledding hill. 

Afternoon: Outdoor Adventures 

  • Summer Option - Scenic Lift Rides: Take the ski lift to the summit of Beech Mountain Resort (5,506 feet) for breathtaking panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

  • Winter Option - Sledding Hill: Enjoy the free, well-maintained municipal sledding hill, which features snow-making capabilities for guaranteed fun, usually open from late November to March.

  • Lake Coffey: A small, serene mountain lake with a flat 1/4-mile walking track, perfect for a leisurely stroll. 

Evening: Relaxation and Views

  • Sunset at Sunset Park: Visit this aptly named park for stunning, unobstructed sunset views over the mountains.

  • Dinner: at Alpen Restaurant, Bullwinkels Pizzaeria or drive to Banner Elk, close by to try Stonewalls, Artisanal or Banner Elk Cafe.

Seasonal Tips

  • Summer: Enjoy the "Blackberry Jam" events (July/August) for live music and berry picking.

  • Winter: Check the Beech Mountain Resort for skiing, snowboarding, and lessons for ages 4+. Make sure to get your tickets and rental equipment in advance!

  • Note: 4-wheel drive or chains are strongly recommended in winter
